The History of Sigma Phi Rho Fraternity, Inc.

The Greek fraternal tradition in American colleges and the nation itself are nearly the same age. Shortly after the ratification of the Declaration of Independence, the society of Phi Beta Kappa was founded on December 5, 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. It had all the characteristics and brotherhood, a motto, a badge and the background of high idealism. From this beginning sprang our present system of social and professional fraternities and sororities, honor and recognition societies which together have initiated nearly seven million members.

Sigma Phi Rho Fraternity, Inc. is one of the youngest national fraternities in this country. Sigma Phi Rho was chartered by 13 brothers from Wagner College in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and seventy-nine for the purpose of developing a lasting brotherhood. Sigma Phi Rho believes that the development of strong character and good moral judgment is essential in the type of bulwark democracy needs to march ever forward. The purpose of this fraternity is to serve its school and aid in its development and growth. Sigma Phi Rho is highly supportive of other students’ organizations on campus. It is also involved in community activities, thereby improving the public relations between the school and the neighboring community. Sigma Phi Rho Fraternity, Inc. has two interest groups: The Prophets for first semester Freshman and The Rhoman Court for high school students also there is a Sweetheart Court for the undergraduate chapters and colonies which goes under the name of The Rhoses. Sigma Phi Rho Fraternity, Inc. accepts four major organizational goals: the continual building of the concept of lasting brotherhood, fulfillment of developing strong character and good moral judgment, service to the community and high academic achievement. Toward these goals this organization is dedicated. In the years to come, Sigma Phi Rho Fraternity, Inc. plans to translate goals expressed at the founding and periodically reaffirm throughout its existence into programs, projects and activities which will have contemporary value as well as enduring significance to the unique history of Sigma Phi Rho Fraternity, Inc.
